Produce your own TV show

How do I start my own show?

1) Attend an Orientation and become a member! Free orientations are scheduled twice a month at CTSCC. These orientations give you an opportunity to get many of your questions answered and the chance to sign up as a member. Basic membership starts at $25, but other levels of membership are available.

2) Take classes! After becoming a member, you can take classes and become familiar with the equipment you would like to use. If you would like to produce your show in the studio, you can become studio certified by taking the Studio Camera, Studio Audio, Studio CG, and Studio Director classes. If you would like to work in the field, you can take the Basic Field Camera class. Learn how to edit your show with the iMovie Basics, Final Cut Pro Basics, or KRON Editing classes.

3) Get experience! To gain experience with this equipment you can volunteer on a Community TV Production. You can call Kathy D’Angelo for more information at 425-8848 ext.21.

4) Get certified! Sign up to become a certified producer either in the studio, in the field, or both. The Producer’s Certification teaches you how to plan and successfully complete a show and is required for all access producers.

5) Submit a proposal and find a crew! The program proposal is meant to give Community TV the information it needs to help you complete your production. On this proposal you will also be listing any crew that you will be using on your program. Each crewmember must be certified on the equipment they are using. To find crewmembers you can talk to an access facilitator who has a list of people who want to volunteer on shows. This list is available in check out.

6) Reserve equipment and facilities!  Check-out hours are 3:30-8:30 Wednesday-Sunday, and 3:30-5:30 on Monday. Most equipment is checked out for 24 hours and may not be checked out for more than 48 hours without approval. Hours for editing, logging, and studio use are 1:00-9:00 Wednesday-Saturday and 3:00-9:00 on Sunday.

7) Submit your show! Your show must meet certain technical requirements to be cablecast. Generally Community TV accepts DVDs, Video Tape (limited), and MPEG-2’s. Program lengths are typically 28:30 for a “half hour” program and 58:30 for an “hour” program. For non-series programs we will accept any length, though the aforementioned lengths are still recommended.
