Community Television of Santa Cruz County Youth A/V Grant Guidelines

WELCOME GRANT SEEKERS

The mission of Community Television of Santa Cruz County (CTV) is to foster community dialogue and individual self-expression through television, the Internet and other electronic media. Priority will be given to Santa Cruz County organizations serving the youth of our county and proposals that further the CTV mission. All grantees must provide a minimum of one hour per quarter of content that will appear on CTV channels.

WHO WE SUPPORT AND WHAT WE PROVIDE

We are looking for Santa Cruz County organizations that enhance academic achievement and prepare youth and young adults for employment or higher education with skills using Digital Media tools. Our grant program is supported by PEG (Public, Education and Government Access) funds provided for this purpose, collected from cable subscribers and administered by Santa Cruz County. Grants will provide equipment only, not funding.

OUR PROCESS

We hold a grant workshop on March 15. Applications must be submitted by April 15. Grants will be awarded on June 1. Equipment will be available in late August.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

To achieve the interest area goals described above, we will evaluate proposals and select Santa Cruz County organizations that demonstrate the following:

  1. A clear mission and related service repertoire
  2. The need for the proposed project within a defined population
  3. Alignment between the proposed project and the organization’s mission
  4. A curriculum that:
    1. utilizes the equipment
    2. teaches the techniques and language of visual story-telling and the communication of ideas
    3. teaches event documentation
    4. results in the production of content for CTV
  5. Clear and measurable objectives likely to produce results
  6. A well-developed description of the type of programming to be provided to CTV
  7. Staff that has proven video production skills as well as the skills, capacity and experience to carry out the proposed activities and maintain the equipment
  8. Space and proper controls to ensure the equipment will be both protected and fully utilized

OUR REVIEWERS GIVE PRIORITY TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT:

  1. 1) Utilize proven strategies to address recognized needs
  2. Use sound governance and management practices
  3. Leverage other resources and support

WE LOOK FOR GRANT PROPOSALS THAT WILL DO THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Address community challenges, underserved populations and/or service gaps
  2. Articulate desired results, effective methods, and viable plans for maintaining ongoing efforts
  3. Demonstrate strong community support, capable leadership and knowledge of, and involvement in, the communities served
  4. Incorporate fresh, innovative approaches that are based on research, experience and best practices in the field
  5. Use collaborative strategies that support efficiencies, increase effectiveness and build leadership for achieving broader community impact
  6. Provide at least 1-hour of content each quarter for our channels.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Operate as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, a project under the fiscal sponsorship of a nonprofit, or a public agency
  2. Benefit residents in Santa Cruz County
  3. Adhere to a Board-approved nondiscrimination policy regarding employment, governance, and service

RESTRICTIONS

Organizations with a current grant from CTV may only apply if all current grant terms have been met to the satisfaction of CTV.

THREE YEAR GRANT POLICY

Equipment grants are for a period of three years from the date the equipment is delivered. All equipment granted under this proposal remains the property of Community Television of Santa Cruz County and will be returned to CTV at the end of the grant period. Organizations may submit a new grant application at the end of the three-year period to replace existing equipment if all requirements of the current grant period have been met to the satisfaction of CTV.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

All applicants must apply using our online application between January 1 and March 30 of each year. In addition to the online application, applicants will need to submit the curriculum associated with the application, and the demographics of the organization’s target population. Additional information may be requested during the review process.

All applicants should be prepared to submit the following information upon request:

  1. A list of current corporate and/or foundation funders with contact names for those institutions (individual donors need not be listed)
  2. A list of current board members that includes the affiliation for each member (e.g., their primary employer) and indicates which members are officers
  3. A copy of the organization’s board-approved nondiscrimination policy
  4. A copy of the organization’s current annual budget as compared with actual year-to-date income and expenses
